Below you will find the outline to her project, pictures of her protest water bottle, a link to her blog and a newspaper article that discuss her project being put into action.
FDR could not be more proud, WAY TO GO ANA!
Peru’s Amazon has always been the main attraction in this country, but now it’s being demolished. Illegal mining has completely wiped out more than 30,000 hectares of Madre de Dios, and I’m sure they will keep destroying more. Those 30,000 hectares will never have the chance to replant themselves, due to the mining and use of mercury. Not only have trees been killed, but the lakes and rivers around it are contaminated. They are filled with Mercury and bacteria that can and have lead animals and humans to death. We have to take in mind that not only is illegal mining affecting our environment, but also our community; kids all ages are being mistreated and used as workers with low pays, mothers who drink this water have given birth to deformed babies, these are just a couple examples of what illegal mining is creating. As someone once said one day, “Fight for what you believe in”, and I’m gonna do just that. What the government and illegal mining is creating, is wrong they are killing Peru’s amazon, and as a student who has been taught to save the environment, I’m not going to allow it.
What I plan to do:
This form of protest will allow citizens to physically see with their own eyes the kind of water that is being contaminated in Madre de Dios. The protests consists of distributing ‘’normal” water bottles, but they have a twist. These bottles will be filled with the contaminated water from Madre de Dios. On the back of the bottle (label), you can see the ingredients, which will be contaminated minerals such as mercury.
When will the protest take place:
Date: June 11th, location would be: El Centro de Lima
The reason for why I chose “El Centro de Lima” (Plaza San Martin) as my location was because El Centro de Lima is one of the busiest places in Lima, it is filled with people 24/7. I also chose Miraflores as my other location, because although there is a lot of people in El Centro de Lima I want the awareness to be distributed around all Lima not only one place, plus Miraflores is a place were a lot of tourists hang out, which will bring more attention.
The protest will take place Saturday 10th in the afternoon (2-4pm). The reason for why I chose Saturday was because it's a weekend, most people will be in the streets with their families, also people who work have lunch hours between 2-4pm, which allow them to see the protest.
